The age of a website
"I just had an idea, a great idea, an idea revolving around a keyword and a market that as yet has not been exploited. I logged into my domain registrar, purchased the domain for approximately $10 per year for five years, threw up a few pages of content, and created thousands of dynamic pages. It only took me an hour and a half."
This is exactly why the age of the website is so important in ranking factors in this day in age. It is so easy for people to exploit keyword niches through the use of many tools on the market today. While those aren't always even worth the money, there are many programmers out there who can easily write new tools that are undetectable to the current algorithms. It is just for this reason, why the search engines have come to put a lot of weight on the age of the website.
Putting greater weight on on the age of a site does a couple things. One, it ensures that the business model is a sound one and is making the owner more than the $10 a year required to register the domain plus the few dollars a month for the hosting account. This is at the least extreme example.
On the high extreme example, the businesses is successful and has been around for years, and it has gained a high level of trust.
Trust is what it is all about, when the search engines have to choose between two websites that are very similar; of course they're going to pick the search engine that have established more trust with the general Web population. And one of the biggest ways they do this is through a process more advanced but similar to a whois. This way they can easily see the age of site, and more.
I had a client who had a simple local service business, he was basically a gardener albeit a specialized gardener and for privacy I won't go into details more than that. When I looked at his site his on page factors were terrible, I knew that I would have to totally rebuild the website to make it even possible for the search engines to effectively spider his site.
One huge thing he had going for him was his domain age. He had the website since late 90s. When I saw this, I knew this was a client I would definitely be able to help. Here he had many of the site factors already in place due to his site being so old. I knew all I had to do was concentrate and really get down to the on page factors.
So built him a website with on page, content loaded, error free, css, perfection, and within a couple months he was at the top of search results in his local market.
He needed this, because previously the only two factors that he had going for him were pre-existing inbound links, and a very old and trusted domain.
However, with these two factors already in place, I was able to do wonders in a short amount of time, and look like a marketing genius. This is how important the age of a website can be, and many times an old website/domain brings with it many aged links as well, and this combination can be priceless to your SEO efforts.
